George Reid 1919-2008
George moved from Calgary to Vermilion in 1980, while in Calgary he had been a member of the Calgary Highlanders serving as both Pipe Major and instructor. He also instructed the Royal Canadian Legion Boy's Pipe & Drum band for about 15 years. In 1980 there was no active band in Vermilion, so he was usually found piping was one of several local pipers. George had spent some time instructing Cliff Brown who was a member of the Provost Pipe & Drum band. In 1981 the Provost group moved to Wainwright where the Wainwright Legion Pipe Band was formed. George took over as pipe major that same year. The Wainwright band folded around 1990, so from then until 2000 there were no active bands in the Vermilion area. During this time, George continued to instruct students from the area who were interested in learning bagpipes. In 2000 a few of the local pipers (including George) and drummers formed the Lakeland Pipe & Drum band. George played for a number of years with the band and continued to teach bagpipes until a week before he died in 2008 at 88 years old.
