I started playing the drums when I was about 12 using only a practice pad and sticks. I eventually saved enough money to buy a drum set, which totally thrilled my parents. I played drums and percussion in the school band and continued to play after graduation for a few years with the Edmonton Cosmopolitan Music Society. Over the years, I have accumulated a wide variety of drum and percussion instruments that I enjoy playing. I wanted to be a rock star but since that didn’t work out, the next best thing was to join the Lakeland Pipe and Drum band. Although I can’t even remember how many years I have been part of the band, playing the snare drum, I continue to enjoy being a member and the company of my fellow pipers and drummers. I look forward to many more years of drumming

After working with Barry Roth for a few months, I heard that he was in a local pipe & drum band and as a newcomer to town, I asked if I could come out one evening to hear them practice. I missed the old days when my daughter was a highland dancer & the whole social aspect that went along with being a dance Mom. I went to a practice one night and Barry suggested I learn to play the bagpipes, after laughing hard, as I never learned to read music, he said then how about the tenor drum (in his words, you are never too old to learn) and I said sure why not. I figured after 60 odd years it was time to step out of my comfort zone and have a bit of fun. The sound of pipe bands have always pulled on my heart strings, now I am part of it too. A dedicated group of regular folks who come together for the love of music, thanks for letting me be a part of that love.

Drew Rowan
My name is Drew Rowan and I am 7 years old. I started taking regular drum lessons when I was
6 years old. I also play piano.
I got involved in the band because I like the sound of Highland music and I wanted to play the
Highland snare drum. Why? My brother was already playing the bagpipes.
I really want to go to Scotland and play and I like to play in a Highland band more than playing at
home. When I’m not practicing music, I like to play baseball, soccer, golf, hockey, and Minecraft.

Born in Lloydminster. I started playing the tenor drum while enrolled in the 186 Cadet Squadron & saw how much fun it was being part of their band. Through my friendship with the Rowan family, I started playing with the Lakeland Pipes & Drums Band in Vermilion in 2018. In 2019 I attended summer camp at Rocky Mountain Cadet Training Centre to achieve my level 3 bass-tenor. I am planning to attend again in 202 to achieve my level 5 standing. I am also working on learning the bagpipes & will continue playing in the Lloyminster Cadets band as well as Lakeland Pipes & Drums band.
